1936 – 2026
It is with deep sadness that the family of Edith Hashmi of Moncton, New Brunswick, announce her passing on October 12, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, just eight days shy of her 90th birthday.
Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, in 1936, Edith was the beloved daughter of the late Richard and Lucy (Coffey) Squires. She was predeceased by her parents and her siblings, Ray, Dave, and Mary.
Edith will be forever loved and deeply missed by her devoted husband of 66 years, Aziz Hashmi; her children, Yousef, (Julie), Karim and Jamila (John), her nephew Nasir (Araceli), and her cherished grandchildren, Olivia, Kayla, and Tyler, who brought her endless pride and joy.
Edith met Aziz in St. John’s in 1958, shortly after he immigrated to Canada from Pakistan. Aziz was instantly captivated by Edith’s fiery red hair and equally spirited personality. Their romance quickly blossomed, and they were married in Ottawa in 1960. Soon after, they settled in Moncton, New Brunswick, where they built a loving home and shared a remarkable life together.
Family was at the heart of everything Edith did. She was a devoted mother who believed every meal was an opportunity to bring loved ones together. Holiday dinners were not reserved for special occasions but were often served as everyday expressions of love. An exceptional baker, Edith became famous among family and friends for her banana chocolate chip muffins, cream cheese brownie muffins, and her carrot cake topped with homemade icing.
One of Edith’s greatest pleasures was playing bridge. She approached the game with enthusiasm and a healthy competitive spirit, particularly when hosting. Guests could always count on her signature bread pudding and a small aperitif to keep the atmosphere warm, lively, and fun.
Later in life, Edith discovered a passion for golf. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time on the fairways at Maplewood Golf Club in Moncton and during winters in Florida, where she and Aziz spent many happy seasons as snowbirds. She especially loved challenging her son-in-law to a round whenever the opportunity arose.
While never formally involved in politics, Edith was known for her strong opinions, quick wit, and willingness to engage thoughtfully in discussions about the political issues of the day. Her intelligence, warmth, and sense of humour endeared her to everyone who knew her.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Monarch Hall at Parkland Riverview for the compassion, kindness, and professionalism shown to Edith throughout her stay. A small service was held on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, in Riverview, New Brunswick.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Edith’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care and direction of Fergusons Riverview Funeral Centre & Fergusons Crematorium, 214 Pine Glen rd., Riverview, NB., E1B 1V6, (506-857-9544).
