Because of today’s storm, students have a snow day off school today, that includes Anglophone East and Francophone South school districts and Anglophone North schools in Rexton and Miramichi.
Have you ever wondered how decisions are made when it comes to whether or not to call off school, in advance of a storm?
Anglophone East Superintendent Gregg Ingersoll says they begin the process long before school is scheduled to begin, “We make the decision early and we rely with the information we have at the time. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is usually out on the roads already, and we check the conditions and the forecast. 95 per cent of the time, that weather information is very accurate.
Ingersoll says it is much easier to call off school in advance, as opposed to opening schools and having to close them half way through the day. That involves contacting all of the parents and ensuring they are able to pick up their kids, or get them off the bus when they arrive home.
