May 18, 1951 – May 25, 2026
Dalton, Maura Ann, died in Moncton on May 25, 2026, at the age of 75.
Born in Chatham, New Brunswick, she was the eldest of four children born to the late William (Billy) and Pauline (Desmond) Dalton. Raised in the Miramichi, Maura attended Saint Mary’s Convent School, Newcastle and later graduated from Moncton High.
Inspired by her mother, Pauline, she followed in her footsteps to become a nurse. Maura graduated from St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, NS in 1975, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Her graduating class of 19 continued to stay in touch and in October 2025, 17 old friends gathered together at St. FX to celebrate their 50th Golden Anniversary.
Like so many Maritimers in the late 1970s, Maura decided to travel West and moved to Calgary. She expanded her nursing career at the Colonel Belcher Hospital, public health, and for several years, she served as a nursing co-ordinator in the home care division, Calgary Health Services.
As much as Maura enjoyed her career and her outdoor adventures, skiing, canoeing and gardening, she decided to move back home to New Brunswick — after 14 years away. She settled in Moncton with her family, following the birth of her nephew William.
In 1990, Maura joined the Horizon Health program as Manager, Extra-Mural/Driscoll, where she worked until her retirement in 2022. She was well known for having a high standard of dedication and commitment to all her team members, encouraging growth and personal development. She did so with grace, kindness, positivity and a sense of humour.
Maura was a woman who loved life. She was a born storyteller with the Miramichi humour she inherited from her father Billy, whom she adored. But this was only one side of her — the people closest to Maura knew her as quiet and steady, the one her family and friends came to when they needed a hand.
To her siblings, Maura was their guiding light. To her cousins and friends, to know Maura was to know true kindness and generosity and lasting friendship. Visitors from near and far were always welcome at the Dalton house where they enjoyed great comfort and hospitality. Maura loved taking road trips with her sister Mary Ellen, including sightseeing and shopping in PEI, to Newcastle visiting their brother Paul, to Chatham visiting relatives and to Halifax to visit William’s family.
To her nephew William, she was devoted and loved him as if he were her own throughout her life. She took an active interest in all his sports, especially hockey. In later years, she was delighted with her great-niece Belle, who brought her immense joy. Regular phone calls to her sister Julia in BC kept her in touch with nephew Zach’s latest accomplishments and career plans.
Maura was predeceased by her parents, William (Billy) and Pauline (Desmond) Dalton.
She is survived by her brother Paul, Miramichi; her sisters Mary Ellen, Moncton, and Julia, Vancouver; her nephew William Nelson (Ellen) and great-niece Belle, Halifax; and nephew Zachary Reimer, Vancouver.
Maura was a faithful parishioner of St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church, Moncton.
The family would like to thank the staff of Extra Mural, a place dear to Maura.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 3 from 2 to 5 pm at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Rd, Moncton, NB (506-858-1995).
