George H. LeBlanc

1955 – 2026

With broken hearts, the family of George H. LeBlanc announces his peaceful passing at The Moncton Hospital on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. He endured a courageous and long battle with Corticobasal Syndrome.

Born in Moncton on January 4, 1955, he was a graduate of Moncton High School and the University of New Brunswick (BBA ’78, LLB ‘84), George built a distinguished legal career as a partner at Cox & Palmer and was appointed as Queen’s Counsel in 2014.

George was a long-time champion of the city of Moncton which he loved and was so deeply proud of. His political career spanned over 20 years with him serving three terms as a city councillor (1995–2004) and culminating in his tenure as Mayor of Moncton from 2008 to 2016.

George’s leadership was defined by vision, honesty, empathy and forward thinking. He was instrumental in helping to unite and rebuild the community in the aftermath of the 2014 tragedy. He recognized the importance of our community’s youth voice and established the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council. George’s legacy may indeed be in his fulfilling the vision of revitalizing the downtown core, and the construction of the Avenir Centre. In a beautiful full-circle event, George—who established the Order of Moncton to honor exceptional citizens—became a recipient of the prestigious award himself in 2024.

George was a long time Rotarian and lived by their motto, “Service Above Self”. These values were recognized by his club when they awarded him the distinguished Paul Harris Award. His volunteer contributions were vast, including: Co-chair of the Mammography Matters campaign and deputy chair of the Healthy Returns Capital Campaign for the Moncton Hospital. President of Moncton Headstart and its Foundation, Vice-President of the Moncton Boys and Girls Club, and Director of Moncton Youth Residences.

Above all, George’s greatest joy was found at home. He was a soulmate to his wife of 44 years, Kathy (nee Wilt), the love of his life and biggest supporter. He was a tremendously proud father to Jordan (Heather) and Brittany (Jordan Clouthier), instilling values of integrity, hard work, and the importance of prioritizing family. George was also blessed five times over to take on the role as “Papa” to his treasured grandchildren: Caleb, Jack, Brayden, Cameron, and Madison.

When he wasn’t practicing law or leading the city, George was an avid downhill skier, a lover of books, and a movie buff. He found peace in the music of jazz, Bocelli, and his hero, Bruce Springsteen. George also valued his loyal and long-term friendships. His happy place was Caissie Cape, where he spent summers collecting sea glass, star gazing, and enjoying the company of his family and friends.

George was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Genevieve (Genny) LeBlanc, and his infant brother, Daniel. He is survived by his sisters Bernadette Donelle (Dave) and Elaine Lenehan (Mark), his brother Michael (Gail), and a large, loving extended family of in-laws, nieces, and nephews. He also leaves behind a group of wonderful and loyal friends.

We have unequivocally lost one of the good ones. As George’s music hero Springsteen wrote: “It’s not the time in your life, it’s the life in your time.” For all of those who knew him, we think you would agree, George lived an extraordinarily meaningful life in his too-short time with us.

A Celebration of George’s Life will be held in the Spring, with details to be announced at a later date. George’s arrangements have been entrusted into the professional care of Fergusons Funeral Home & Fergusons Crematorium, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (506-858-1995).

In lieu of flowers, donations to Friends of the Moncton Hospital Foundation (friendsfoundation.ca) or The Karing Kitchen (75 Alma St., Moncton, NB, E1C4Y3, 506-854-3837) in George’s name would be appreciated. Online condolences for the family can be shared at
