Millions Of Canadians Procrastinating Over Tax Filing

If you find yourself putting off work on your income tax return – apparently you are not alone in your procrastination.

As of last week, only 11 million returns had been filed and tax expert Roger Haineault says a lot of returns are due to be filed between now and the end of the month.

“Last year I checked the numbers, and 28.3 million T1 returns, that’s the return you and I file, were filed to the government,” says Haineault.

He says the average tax refund is running around $1,700 this year.

Haineault adds that high average is being boosted by a new family tax cut.

“Under the program this year, people can generate up to a $2,000 credit between Mom and Dad by completing the form 1A that they find with their packet,” says Haineault.

He adds it’s also a good time to think about things like medical expenses.

“And that includes their Blue Cross or other health care premium that they might pay at work,” says Haineault. “People often forget that, they might forget about the glasses they bought or the contacts they had.”

The deadline for submitting your taxes is April 30th.
