Historic Intercolonial Railway Celebrated In Moncton

The importance of the Intercolonial Railway is being celebrated in Moncton today.

Federal officials unveiled a plaque at the VIA Rail station commemorating the ICR and its importance to the Maritimes.

Metro Moncton MP Robert Goguen says many generations of families – including his own – have worked in the rail industry in the Hub City.

The Intercolonial Railway was the first rail link between the Maritimes and Central Canada and opened to traffic in 1876.

The ICR is credited with opening up interprovincial and international trade in Canada.
