Fewer Canadians Exercising Their Right To Vote

Canadians have a right to vote in all elections but the trouble is, fewer and fewer citizens are exercising that right.

A Mount Allison University professor says the voting-age population seems more dissatisfied with the current choices on the ballot.

Assistant politics professor Mario Levesque says the last two federal elections show a disturbing trend.

“In 2011, about 61 percent of eligible voters voted in Canada. That’s only slightly higher than the previous election in 2008 at 58 percent which is very, very low. It has been decreasing since about the early 1970s.”

Even if you don’t like the choices, Levesque says you can spoil your ballot but he adds you have still exercised your right to vote.
