Much work still needs to be done, after this weekend’s extreme and unusual weather.
According to the provincial government, the hardest hit areas, were Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton regions and surrounding areas.
Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Bill Fraser says there are still a lot bridges and roads that are impacted by high levels, and are closed to the public,”Flooding or washout can be very challenging for them. I had the opportunity to travel around yesterday afternoon and there are many private homeowners who are stranded in their homes because the culvert that leads into their home has been washed out, and they have not access to get them back to the highway.”
He says the crews are just starting to assess all of the damage.
“We’re still in the assessment stage of many of the washouts in various areas in the province. Our crews are out in full force. We also have contracted the services of private Contractors to work alongside our crews in various parts of the province,” Fraser says.

He adds that he is very proud of the work the Crews have done, including those who have performed heroic acts, “An elderly gentleman and his dog were in a minivan in the Fredericton Junction area. The water overtook the van and washed it off the road. He was trapped in his vehicle. People from our team from DTI heard him yelling for help. They waded through the cold water, unprotected, to rescue him.”
Extreme weather saw torrential rains in parts of the province, with amounts ranging from 25 millimetres to over 100 millimetres. That caused high waters, that washed out roads and bridges.
Temperatures dipped 14 degrees on Saturday in just one hour, and causing freezing on trees and roads…
