The CEO for the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Moncton hasn’t heard many concerns from local businesses over the potential effects of coronavirus.
John Wishart says there’s hasn’t been much impact yet in this area, that he is aware of.
“There are probably are a few businesses here in the region, depending on the supply chain, and the manufacturing process. Maybe some of the components they need originate in China, or other international destinations, and they may be impacted,” Wishart says.
One area he suggests we could potentially see an impact is tourism.
“This hasn’t happened yet, but what might be on the horizon is the potential impact on the Tourism sector if coronavirus continues into April and May. There might be a push or a plan to stay closer to home rather than travel. That has yet to be seen, but certainly the regions around the world that are impacted right now are seeing that kind of effect,” Wishart says.
Speaking from personal experience, Wishart says COVID-19 has interrupted his plans for a trip to Italy this week.
He was supposed to leave on the trip to with a group of Chamber of Commerce Executives from across North America.
“The plan was to go to Northern Italy this week. We were going to be based in Venice. Last Tuesday, the Tour Operator made the wise decision to cancel the tip or postpone the trip because of the situation in Italy.”
