New Brunswick Southwest MP John Williamson questioned the Prime Minister during Question Period yesterday, wondering why he hasn’t taken action against the blockades.
Opponents of a pipeline project in British Columbia have set up blockades across Canada. Many are protesting in support of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation, because the pipeline would cross through their land.
He says job losses are growing by the hour, “If these illegal rail blockades continue, Atlantic Canada will run out of propane,. Airports will run out of de-icing fluids that keep up moving in the winter and water treatment facilities will soon lack chemical supplies that keep our water safe.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded, “”If we do not do everything to resolve this situation peacefully, the disruptions to the economy and to hardworking Canadians and their jobs from coast to coast to coast, could be massive and could last over the coming months.”
Williamson says, “When Canadian workers and families have their livelihood and safety pout at risk, the Prime Minister offers nothing but platitudes. When will this government finally stand up for Atlantic Canada?”
Protests have forced the stoppage of most CN and VIA Rail trains across the country. VIA Rail announced almost 1000 layoffs yesterday as a result.
CN Rail has issued over 450 layoff notices to its staff.
