MLA-Elect Clarifies Position On West End School

During the final weeks of the provincial election campaign, a proposed new west end school became a hot button issue in Moncton South.

Liberal incumbent and MLA-elect Cathy Rogers says she made a couple of commitments before the writ was issued, “We will not have a situation where a West end school leaves the West end. I have committed that we will follow policy which dictates if it is at all possible to rebuild a west end school on existing government owned property, that is what we will do.”

As the campaign went on, Rogers says government engineers told her that the Bessborough School property was among the possible sites for a new school.

“Some places were excluded and did not work, and in fact I did not even know those places were, but I did hear that it did work on Bessborough property,” Rogers says.

However, she adds another candidate was spreading misinformation about a mega-school being built north of St. George Boulevard.

“I would hear things like, another candidate came to my door and said that you are building a mega school across the other side of St. George Boulevard, but there is nothing further from the truth,” Rogers says.
