This is National Tree Day giving Canadians a chance to appreciate the many great and unexpected benefits that trees provide us all.
Tree Canada is a national non-profit charity dedicated to planting and nurturing trees.
Spokesperson Marie Paul Godin says Canadian cities have been losing tree cover in recent years due to poor planning, climate change and invasive insects.
“Some cities have 10 to 15 per cent canopy cover, while other cities have 20 to 30 per cent canopy cover. The more trees we can have, the better for all Canadians because they provide so many good benefits for us.”
Godin adds research shows that adding 10 trees to one city block can actually give benefits to residents which would be similar to receiving a hefty salary increase or feeling much younger.
“They remove the carbon dioxide and store it inside their own branches, while releasing the oxygen back into the air for us to breathe,” Godin says.
