New By-Law In Moncton Means Potential Fines For Long Grass

The Tri-Communities are now all on the same page when it comes to long grass.

Moncton City Council voted unanimously last night, in favour of fining those who have grass longer than eight inches long.

Mayor Dawn Arnold says they could face fines of up to $2100.

“This is not a Big Brother situation and we are not out to get anyone. We just never had any sort of authority or any ability to come back when someone was a long term neglector. This is also not something for those who just forget to cut their lawn once in awhile. It is for those guilty of long term negligence. We’ve had neighbours that were very distraught, year after year with the same homeowner or landlord that often didn’t live in the city. It was hard to track them down, and ask them to cut their lawn. This can give us that ability.”

Moncton is the last of the tri-communities to implement this type of by-law. Riverview and Dieppe already have similar ones in place.
