Codiac Vikings Aquatic Club Affected By St. Pat’s Closure

The Codiac Vikings Aquatic Club has been left scrambling to find pool space, after last week’s closure of St. Pat’s Family Centre.

The swim team is primarily based out of the Pat Crossman Centre in Riverview, but they were also using the pool at St. Pat’s for their developmental program, that helps teach kids to swim..

Head Coach Melanie Melanson says we are the only City in the province, that is home to two large competitive swim teams, that don’t have the space to continue growing, “You can only grow as big as your space. I know a lot of clubs in the province that could be a lot larger, but they don’t have the space to grow. The demand is definitely there in Greater Moncton.”

The two swim teams are the Codiac Vikings and CNBO, which is based out of CEPS on the U de M campus.

Melanson says, “If we keep losing pools like this, then it will definitely hinder our ability to grow. It would be the same thing if we were losing gyms, hockey rinks or soccer fields.”

The team is hoping they will find replacement pool time, but they’ll have to work fast.

“I am hoping that we can find pool time elsewhere. We don’t need a lot of extra space, but losing that time will mean we have to scramble before the start of the season in September,” Melanson says.
