Donated Mini-Splits Help Keep Animals Cool At Greater Moncton SPCA

Back in December, the Greater Moncton SPCA received a donation of two mini splits to replace their broken boiler and also to help keep the heating bills down.

Turns out, they were a major benefit during the recent heat wave as well.

Executive Director Dave Rogers says in previous years, in the case of extreme heat, there was always a concern for both the staff and the animals.

“With the walls being made of concrete, it would heat and become a small oven, and with all of the cleaning of kennels, there was a lot of humidity, and nothing ever really dried completely, which poses a risk for mould,” Rogers says.

He adds, “We brought in bottled water, we were worried about dehydration and heat stroke, with both the animals and staff last year. This has been amazing this year. It is a God Send.”

During the heat wave this week, they moved the animals into the two large rooms where the mini splits were installed, so they had a much better environment during the extreme heat, “The animals were kept cool and comfortable,” Rogers says.

The staff have been able to keep the windows closed and have relied solely on the mini splits to keep the rooms cold..
