Auditor-General On How Province Is Doing On Climate Change

The province and NB Power are making progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions according to Auditor-General Kim MacPherson and the 2020 target is expected to be reached.

MacPherson is still calling for legislated targets for reductions to indicate how serious the government’s commitment is.

New Brunswick ranks 8th among the provinces when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions. The Irving Oil refinery and NB Power’s coal fired Belledune generating station produce one third of the emissions. She’s concerned there’s no agreeent in place with the federal government on phasing out NB Power’s coal fired generating plant at Belledune. It produces 13 per cent of NB Power’s electricity.

MacPherson says the 2020 reduction targets are likely to be attained but significant action is needed to reach the 2030 and 2050 targets.
