It took the death of international cyclist Ellen Waters in Sussex to get the wheels in motion to make cycling safer in the province. Before that, the initiative had stalled.
Ellen’s Law will be coming up in the Legislature later this week stipulating drivers have to stay at least a metre away from cyclists.
Wayne Arrowsmith is with Saint John Cycling and serving as a government liaison and he says other changes are being sought.
Cyclists would like to see the distance between drivers and themselves increased to one and a half metres if the posted speed limit is higher than 50 kilometers an hour. They are also calling for bike lanes to be recognised in provincial elegislation and children allowed to ride their bikes on sidewalks.
