A seniors advocate believes many seniors who need special care will be left with nothing based on the provincial budget.
Cecile Cassista is with the Coalition for Seniors and Nursing Home Residents’ Rights in New Brunswick.
Cassista says disadvantaged seniors will have to give up everything they have in order to pay the true cost of care.
She says by doing that they’re going to be looking at bank accounts and investments, and once that is gone, they’ll have to sell their home. But then seniors will be forced to sell their home and those funds will become liquid assets, and that’s compeltely devastating.”
Cassista adds a tax break for seniors to make home renovations is not the right way to go to keep the elderly in their own homes, but she believes only a few wealthy seniors will be able to take advantage of that program.
