Challenges Lie Ahead In Moncton’s 2015 Operating Budget

The 2015 Operations Budget for the City of Moncton was presented at a Council meeting last night totalling almost $145 million, and the City could be facing a potential $2 million dollar shortfall.

But Mayor George Leblanc is determined not to increase taxes, and says that will be a last resort.

Chief Financial Officer John Martin says despite some difficult challenges the budget does present some good spending.

He says, “There are key areas in road maintenance, street and sidewalk snow clearing, public transit, storm sewer maintenance, and investments in parks and trails and cultural and senior programs.”

Even if taxes don’t go up, the average resident with a home assessed at $157 thousand will still see their property taxes, rise by $34 dollars a year.

Budget deliberations will continue on Thursday and Friday this week.
