NB Government Introduces Newborn Testing For Sickle Cell Disease

The province is introducing testing for another ailment in its newborn screening test panel.

Newborns are now being tested for sickle cell disease in New Brunswick.

Sickle Cell anemia disease is a serious blood disorder that is inherited, and early detection and treatment can make a huge difference for patients. It helps them to live a healthier and longer life.

Newborns are now screened for 16 disorders including blood disorders and for cystic fibrosis.

Newborn screening samples are collected from infants and are sent to the Maritime Newborn Screening Program at the IWK in Halifax.
