Warm Weather Prompts Return Of Blue-Green Algae

The City of Moncton is notifying residents about the potential presence of blue-green algae in the Irishtown Nature Park.

Due to warm temperatures, there is a pre-bloom of blue-green algae in the lake.

While no blooms have surfaced yet, park-goers and their pets are being asked stay out of the water.

Kayaking, canoeing, and other recreational activities have been suspended until further notice.

Blue-green algae also poses a threat to the tri-community’s drinking water supply at the Turtle Creek watershed.

City council held a special meeting on Monday to address the removal of existing clarifier equipment and the installation of new city-supplied equipment.

According to city engineer Jack MacDonald, the work should be completed by the end of next month.
