UPDATE: “Hero” In Ottawa Shootings – A New Brunswicker

The Sergeant-at-Arms in the House of Commons who reportedly stepped in and stopped an assailant in the House of Commons is being hailed a hero. Fifty-eight-year-old Kevin Vickers was praised on social media by MP’s.

On Twitter:

Peter McKay tweeted, “To all in Ottawa, stay safe & strong. Thank God for Sgt at Arms Kevin Vickers & our Cdn security forces. True heroes #cndpoli”

Bob Rae tweeted, “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Nathan Cirillo of Hamilton and thanks for the courage and valour of Kevin Vickers and police.”

According to Wikipedia, Vickers was born in Chatham, New Brunswick. He served with the RCMP for 29 years, and in 2005, he joined the House of Commons as Director of Security Operation. He was appointed Sergeant-of-Arms in 2006. The shooting incident in Ottawa today left Canadian soldier, 24-year-old Corporal Nathan Cirillo dead. He was shot near the National War Memorial. The suspected shooter then entered the House of Commons, where he was reportedly shot and killed.
