UPDATE: Dolma Foods Building Demolished After Fire

The Dolma Foods building on St. George Street has been reduced to a pile of rubble.

A fire broke out just before midnight last night, and when Moncton firefighters arrived, it took them some time to locate the fire.

Deputy Fire Chief Don McCabe says the fire was burning inside the walls and floor, but there were no flames showing, only smoke.

He says, “This building had a flat roof which had tar and gravel, and then a peak roof was constructed on top of it. The fire was driven down as well as up, and there was a lot of heat in the building. The doors were even hot to touch on the exterior of the building when they arrived. The building had been renovated several times.”

The building contained the Dolma Foods, and a Sushi restaurant, and there were three apartments on the second floor.

McCabe says the safest things to do once the fire was under control, was tear it down.

Canadian Red Cross was called in to offer temporary assistance.

He says it will be hard to determine what caused the fire.

Five adults were left homeless, and McCabe says at least two pet birds were lost in the fire.
