Status Of Provincial NDP Leader Remains Up In The Air

The future of the provincial N-D-P leader appears to be in a state of limbo with Dominic Cardy’s loss in the Saint John East by-election.

After failing to capture the riding of Fredericton West-Hanwell in the general election back in September, Cardy vowed to step down as party leader but now says the party doesn’t seem too keen on seeing him go so his status will be discussed over the next few weeks.

Cardy calls the loss in Saint John East disappointing, saying he and his whole team put everything into the campaign but they did increase the percentage of the NDP vote.

Liberal candidate and Deputy Mayor for Saint John Shelley Rinehart tells us she is not ruling out the possibility of running again, saying she learned a lot during the campaign. Rinehart campaigned by claiming she would provide a strong voice on energy and economic development.

Conservative Glen Savoie won the Saint John East by-election by capturing over 44 per cent of the vote but less than half of the eligible voters took part.

Savoie is a big proponent of shale gas development and says the message to Premier Gallant is clear from the voters in the riding……..Don’t overlook opportunities to create jobs because too many people are leaving the province for greener economic pastures elsewhere.
