The City of Moncton was awarded a gold, silver and bronze medal last night at City Council to celebrate the success of the Canadian Transplant games earlier this year.
The Games are an opportunity for organ transplant recipients to come together to celebrate their health in a friendly spirit of competition.
Games Co-Chair Monique McTiernan-Black says this year marked the first time the games were held in the Maritimes and Moncton was the smallest city to ever host them
Mayor George Leblanc accepted the medals on behalf of the city, and said the games were one of the more emotional athletic events he has attended.
He says, “It was really something to see and to watch the way all of these athletes performed and how they competed. There were a lot of hugs and tears and it was truly a tremendous event.”
McTiernan-Black also said because of excellent fiscal stewardship, as well as last minute sponsors, the games produced a surplus.
