New Brunswick is the odd man out when it comes to the exemption from U.S. softwood lumber tarrifs, more of which have recently been slapped onto Canadian exports.
The Atlantic regional council chair for Unifor Ian Hutchison, who also works in the industry by way of the Irving pulp and paper mill in Saint John, has told us that they’ve been pushing for a fair deal, which ideally, would be a return to the past where all four Atlantic provinces were exempt.
“For 35 years we were exempt from anything, we didn’t have to worry about duties, we didn’t have to worry about antidumping. So, we didn’t pay anything at the border,” says Hutchison.
“That would be ideal for all four Atlantic provinces, I’m glad three have been recommended that, it would have been nice if all four were exempt.”
