Shelters Open Doors To Get Homeless Out Of Windchill

The weather is expected to drive many of the homeless indoors to get out of the cold.

Windchill values of around minus 30 are expected for tonight.

Executive Director for the House of Nazareth Jean Dube says they currently aren’t full at either shelter.

“We are not at capacity at the Clark Street shelter. At the Albert Street shelter we have a capacity of around 64 per people. Currently we are at around 37, so we still have quite a bit of room on the upstairs level,” Dube says.

But they are offering extended hours at the Clark Street location.

“We are going to have the shelter on Clark Street open today because of the cold weather, all day. Normally we don’t do that, but because of the cold weather we keep the doors open,” Dube says.

Dube says those wanting to come in to get warm, can do so at any time, but once 11pm hits, they must stay inside until the morning, “If you are in at 2am or 3am, you can come in and we’ll find you a spot.”.

He adds, they are still operating on the second floor at the Albert Street shelter, but he hopes to have the rest open in the next couple of weeks.
