Senate Change To Medically Assisted Death Bill Rejected

The Senate has passed a revised bill on medically assisted dying by a large margin, 64 to 12, with 7 changes.

The big change passed by the Senate would expand eligibility for medically assisted death to more people.

The Senate amendment to make medically assisted dying open to more people has been rejected by the Trudeau Government. Federal Justice Minister Jody Raybould-Wilson believes the bill passed by MP’s achieved the right balance between medially assisted dying for the terminally ill and respect for life by protecting the vulnerable.

Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott says 90 per cent of doctors aren’t comfortable about the provincial protections now in place for medically assisted dying without federal legislation.

On another controversial issue, the Senate will now be asked whether it approves changing the national anthem to make the lyrics gender neutral after passage by MP’s.
