Rise In Number Legionnaires Disease Cases In NB

Health officials in New Brunswick can’t explain a recent spike in the number of legionnaire’s disease cases in southeastern New Brunswick.

Regional medical officer of health Dr. Yves Leger says four cases have been reported since mid-June which is unusual, “There doesn’t seem to be any common source of exposure throughout the cases to explain the illnes, but each of the cases have one or more potential exposures individually.”

He says the legionella bacteria can be found in warm, stagnant water, “In hot water tanks, hot tubs and spas, in humidifiers, or in decorative fountains. It’s important that you follow the Manufacturers recommendations in terms of maintenance and disinfection.”

Dr. Leger says symptoms to watch out for include coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and nausea and vomiting.
