The Department of Justice and Public Safety says steps are being taken to improve security after an inmate escaped from the Shediac jail.
The inmate took off from the Southeast Regional Correctional Centre in February and wasn’t located until five weeks later.
The Department of Justice and Public Safety completed an internal review.
It says it examined the incident and identified areas where additional safeguards could be put in place.
Enhanced physical security measures have been implemented, and staff procedures and protocols have been amended.
Public Safety Minister Robert Gauvin says corrective action has also been taken against a small number of people.
“Here, a few people fell short of minimum expectations, and the department has addressed that fact,” Gauvin added.
Similar measures are also being taken at other provincial correctional centres as a result of the review.
