New Brunswickers will soon be celebrating Canada Day but many retail workers in the province will be stuck at work.
That’s because this year Canada Day falls on a Sunday with the observed holiday on Monday when retailers have to close for business.
Atlantic director of the Retail Council of Canada Jim Cormier says this is an easy fix that they’ve been working to change for six years now.
“All we’re saying is it’s one day off, make it on the actual Canada Day and not on July 2nd for the retail workforce because they work seven days a week. For everybody else, let them have their Monday off,” says Cormier.
“Giving retail workers the Monday off and then making them work Sunday, which is the Canada Day, that makes absolutely no sense.”
The RCC says Nova Scotia recently made the change meaning that New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador are the only provinces in Atlantic Canada that don’t have this kind of legislation.
