Public Health Working With U de M On TB Case

Public health is working with the Universite de Moncton now that an individual on campus has been diagnosed with tuberculosis.

The risk to the community is quite low but tuberculosis is a lung infection with symptoms such as a prolonged cough, fever, night sweats or loss of appetite.

Regional Medical Health Officer Dr. Yves Leger says the rates of tuberculosis are quite low across Canada and even lower in New Brunswick.

“We see about 5 to 10 cases per year across the province on average. So it is an infection we see in New Brunswick every year. So it’s not unusual to have cases being diagnosed in the region,” he notes.

Interviews have taken place with the patient to determine when they were contagious to others and who they were in contact with.

Dr. Leger adds public health will be following up with those individuals to determine if they were at risk to exposure.
