Provincial Government Looks At Electoral System Overhaul

Hearings are expected to be held in the fall, as the provincial government looks at overhauling the electoral system.

This is being done in advance of the 2018 election.

A discussion paper was released in the legislature this week, and it will be referred to a select committee to be studied further this fall.

Deputy Government House Leader Victor Boudreau says they are looking at things like eliminating barriers to enter politics for underrepresented groups.

They will also study the minimum voting age, with the possibility of lowering it to the age of 16, from 18 years.

It will also look at a preferential ballot or proportional representation system.

A committee of MLA’s is expected to be appointed later this week..
