Provincial Government Is Making It Easier For People To Get Into Agriculture

The provincial government is making it easier for people to access information about becoming farmers.

Agriculture, Aquaculture, and Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet says 5% of total provincial land is taken up with farming, with 11,000 workers and there is opportunity to expand.

His Department recently released a Road Map for Farmers to better inform those who might be interested in agriculture.

“Some of the A to Z steps to necessary to find out what type of permits are needed, regulations in place, and the steps you need to go through to get into farming, whether you want to make this a career choice, or whether you want to go into this as a part time thing to supplement income,” says Doucet.

He says with many current farmers aging, there’s an opportunity for succession.

“Our land prices are very moderate, very reasonable, and not only looking at opportunities for young families,” says Doucet. “But also immigrants that are coming into Canada, so I think there’s some great opportunities, right here in our own province.”

Doucet says the province is constantly working to diversify markets, and products to exploit new opportunities.
