Horizon Health Issues Safety Reminders For Summer Activities

As people continue to spend more time outside for summer, Horizon Health is offering some advice on keeping safe.

Moncton Hospital Chief of Staff Dr. Serge Melanson says it’s mostly a question of being prepared, and knowing what you’re getting into.

He says a good start to the day is to check the weather forecast.

“So for warm days, we basically suggest that people bring lots of water to maintain good hydration, lots of sunscreen and protective clothing to make sure they’re not overly exposed to the sun,” says Dr. Melanson. “When it comes to poor weather of course we tell people to dress in layers.”

Dr. Melanson adds not bringing the right clothing can be dangerous.

“Often people forget that when we dress for our summer events, we often don’t think that a cold rainy day, if we’re not properly dressed can actually lead to milder forms of hypothermia,” says Dr. Melanson. “Which can get people into a lot of trouble, regarding exposure.”

He says much of their advice is common sense.

“When it comes to extreme things, just to let people know where they’re going, and what they plan to do, and when they plan arriving back, whether that’s going for a sail, a hike in the woods or some sort of adventure on those lines,” says Dr. Melanson.

He says no matter what activity you decide to do, it’s crucial to bring enough water to stay properly hydrated.
