MONCTON, N.B. – Moncton’s proposed downtown events centre is getting long-awaited funding from the provincial government.
At the site of the former Highfield Square Mall, Economic Development Minister Bruce Fitch announced today that the province will invest up to 24 million dollars for construction of the centre.
The facility will house an NHL-size rink, concert venue and convention space.
The City of Moncton is still seeking financial support from the federal government before shovels hit the ground.
Opposition Liberal finance critic Roger Melanson says the timing of the announcement is highly suspect, given that the writ will drop at midnight kicking off a provincial election campaign.
