Premier Says NB Must Plan Better For Climate Change

Over the last 18 months, New Brunswick has recorded the worst ice storm and the worst flood in its history.

Premier Brian Gallant says while a single storm can’t be linked to climate change, you can’t deny the frequency and severity of major weather events.

Gallant says the province has to do a better job at planning.

“So we recognize that means because of climate change, we have to step up and ensure we do everything we can to combat climate change and in a way that we are still stimulating the economy. It also means that we have to do everything we can to mitigate the effects of climate change,” he says.

New Brunswick’s Climate Change Secretariat recently announced new guidelines are being created to restrict development in flood-prone areas and all municipalities will be asked to complete assessments by 2020.

As a result of the historic spring flooding, the province has already made it more difficult to rebuild on provincially-regulated land near waterways or wetlands.
