Political Prof Says Parties Should Examine Throne Speech Carefully

The New Brunswick Legislature resumes today. The Liberals will first name a Speaker and then deliver their Throne Speech this afternoon.

Whether the throne speech passes or not, will help determine whether the Liberals will get the opportunity to lead the province.

Canadian Politics Professor at Mount Allison University Mario Levesque says it is in the self interest of the other parties to look at the throne speech carefully, “They may say, there are things in here that overlap with what they like. It may not be be exactly as they like it, but may agree, it is good for the people of New Brunswick. They may agree to put this forward, and in the meantime establish a better financial footing and be ready for another election in 2 or 3 years.”

Levesque believes there will be a lot of commonalities, “Most of the Liberals and Conservatives want to hire more doctors and nurses, that is looking at better health care and working together. I would think the Conservatives will be able to support that, but if not, that tells me, they aren’t interested in making New Brunswick better for New Brunswickers. If they can just co-operate, they can move forward for the people of the province.”

Levesque says if the Liberal throne speech does not receive support from the other parties, the Progressive Conservatives will be given the opportunity to govern.
