Planning ahead is the key to remaining healthy through hot summer weather.
Chief of Staff for The Moncton Hospital Dr. Serge Melanson says regulating your hydration according to what you’re doing is smart.
“So for those people that are going out for a nice leisurely walk, a glass of water or a small bottle would be sufficient,” says Dr. Melanson. “But for those that are planning perhaps a very strenuous, physical event, it would be very wise to make sure the amount of water people ingest is considerably greater.”
Dr. Melanson says anecdotally, if your urine is clear you’re usually in good shape, but if it’s more concentrated you need more water.
He also advises checking the weather forecast before you head out for the day.
“For warm days, we suggest people bring lots of water to maintain good hydration, and lots of sunscreen and protective clothing to make sure they’re not overly exposed to the sun,” says Dr. Melanson.
Overall, he says it pays to be forward thinking, and to use your common sense.
