The Official Languages Commissioner wants to see more bilingual paramedics but that’s easier said than done, according to the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
CUPE Rep Ralph McBride is worried this issue will create divisions among the paramedics because it’s unrealistic to think they can become bilingual at the flick of a switch.
“I know Ambulance NB has provided a five year plan, but even with that, it is going to be very hard to reach. It’s very upsetting to paramedics, because some of them are long term, and have been in the system for a long time, and they’re concerned about promotions.”
McBride says no paramedics will lose their jobs for not being bilingual. Ambulance NB has released a statement that says it wants to ensure this is done smoothly and a meeting with the union is scheduled this week.
