Opposition To North End Residential Development May Delay New School Construction

Fierce opposition to a proposed high density residential development in the North End of Moncton off Maplehurst Drive may jeopardize the construction start of a recently announced new school in the area.

Director of Urban Planning Bill Budd says the province has bought 23 acres already and wants to start building the school in the Spring but delays for the developer could throw a wrench into that schedule.

“So the developer’s gotta get Maplehurst [Drive] opened up, and you know, he’s on a sort of a plan to get this area opened up, but he needs Council to approve this plan,” says Budd.

He says Maplehurst has to be opened up because it will allow for the safe drop off and pick up of students by parents, and buses.

“If we can deal with this in a timely manner, and get it back to Council as soon as possible, it shouldn’t disrupt [the construction schedule] too much,” says Budd. “But again, we’re not going to make everyone happy.”

Moncton City Council tabled the proposal Tuesday night, pending discussion with the developer to address some of the concerns of area residents.
