“Becca’s Spirit Was Much Bigger Than Her Body”: Father Phil Mulligan

Hundreds filled a church in Riverview Wednesday to pay their final respects to Becca Schofield, the young woman who inspired people around the world to be more kind.

Her 15-year old cousin, Yzabelle Lavallee says Becca set an amazing example, and was always there to listen, and to help if you needed it.

“I’m trying to do good deeds here and there, sometimes if I see a homeless [person] I’ll give them some change, or pay for a meal,” she says.

Father Phil Mulligan, who officiated the funeral, says while events like this are always sad, as the service progressed there was an increased feeling of gratitude and thanksgiving.

“And a real celebration for somebody who not only lived their life so well, but lived her dying so beautifully and gracefully,” says Mulligan.

He adds through the power of social media, Becca’s legacy will live on.

“Her spirit was much bigger than her body, and so even if [people] don’t know her today, the stories will continue on for many days, weeks, months and years,” says Mulligan.

Premier Brian Gallant, who also attended the funeral, said Becca exemplified the best of New Brunswick with her selflessness, her love, her kindness, and her ability to inspire good within her community.
