July 31, 1939 – June 18, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Robert Coren of Riverview, New Brunswick. A devoted husband, father, and esteemed officer in the Navy, Robert lived a life defined by his love for his wife Ruby and his dedication to his military career.
Lieutenant-Commander (LCdr) R. Coren answered the call to serve his country in 1956 at a young age of 17. He served as a highly trained Clearance Diving Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, responsible for maritime explosive ordinance disposal, mine countermeasures, and underwater engineering. He notably commanded Fleet Diving Unit (Atlantic), serving as the unit’s Commanding Officer from 1976 to 1980 and continued working for the military in Ottawa at NDHQ (National Defence Headquarters) for several more years. After retiring in the early 1990’s, Bob continued to support the Canadian Military as a Civilian Consultant until 1996.
Among Bob’s accomplishments, he retrieved a World War II Avenger airplane from the bottom of Halifax Harbour, and operated the SDL-1 Submersible which was uniquely designed to allow divers to exit a pressurized airlock to complete deep-sea tasks.
Bob sailed the Seven Seas and visited many countries, representing his country at NATO headquarters in the Netherlands.
Robert leaves behind his son Rob Coren (Dawn) of Ottawa, along with 7 grandchildren; Jill Bozzi (Marco), Alex MacDonald (Laurence), Michael Sarsfield (Rosa), Kyle MacDonald (Trish), Sam Sarsfield, Kevin Coren, Anthony Coren; and 6 great-grandchildren; Matteo Bozzi, Arianna Bozzi, Chloé MacDonald, Léa MacDonald, Colin Sarsfield, and Ella Sarsfield. Robert was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years Ruby, and his daughters Cathy MacDonald (Jack) and Christine Sarsfield (Jerry).
Beyond the uniform, Bob was known for his calm demeanor, finding joy in spending time with loved ones, golf and reading.
Bob will be forever missed by his loved family.
Thank you for your bravery, dedication and personal sacrifices you made to keep Canadians safe.
