Margaret Josephine Hicks

July 8, 1945  –  February 28, 2026

Margaret J. Hicks, 80, of Moncton, passed away peacefully and surrounded by love at Maison Albert House Hospice on Saturday, February 28, 2026. Born in Moncton she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary (McGeown) Mitton.

Margaret spent her early professional career with Co-op Atlantic, spending over 30 years in the Agricultural Department, followed by 10 years with Canada Post. Not one to slow down in retirement, she worked many elections as a Polling Supervisor and also cleaned homes.

Margaret served as President of the Co-op Atlantic Retirees Association, volunteered with Girl Guides of Canada and most recently with the Braesiders Seniors Group.

During her time working and volunteering, Margaret developed lifelong friendships she cherished. Over the years these friends became her extended family with whom she enjoyed traveling, sharing a meal, a game of crib, or just a chat over a glass of wine and bowl of chips.

When she wasn’t working or volunteering, Margie and Claude could be found camping in Shediac or Wheaton Settlement and when not parked, the trailer was on the road bound for Bluegrass Festivals throughout Atlantic Canada and beyond.

In the spring and summer months, you would find Margaret in her gardens, which were the pride of the neighbourhood. Anything she decided to try her hand at, she mastered, and many benefited from her talents which included hairdressing, making wonderful jams, jellies and pickles, sewing and alterations, crafting, painting, and decorating. She was always thinking of others and ways she could bring joy to their lives.

Margaret did save time to travel with her friends Gail, Dorothy, Karen, and Debbie. Together they traveled the world experiencing the beautiful flowers of Hawaii, the amazing animals in Australia, the history of China, the shores of Greece, the architecture in Europe including England, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland and Austria, as well as her most cherished trip to visit family and her mother’s homeland in Ireland.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to special friends Mary, Marcie, Gail, Dorothy, Debbie, Anne, Audrey, Mike, Carry, and Pat; and family members, her twin brother Eugene, Albert, Shawnda, Todd, Kim, Spencer, Tracey, Derrick, Darren, Janet, Donna, and Kimberlee, for the food, calls, and visits that brightened her days over the past 15 months.

A special Thank You goes out to the nurses and staff of Maison Albert House Hospice for the care and compassion extended over the month Margaret stayed in their beautiful facility. The time she spent there was like a home away from home which was so important to her during this time. We also appreciate the devoted support from the nursing staff of the New Brunswick Extra-Mural Program and a huge thanks to Elizabeth from Kindered Home Care for lending a hand and being a shining light during a challenging time.

Margaret will be sadly and dearly missed by her loving husband of 54 years, Claude Hicks of Moncton; children, Tanya MacLeod of Moncton, Travis Hicks (Charla) of Moncton, Sheri Jones (Wayne) of Halifax, NS and Darren Jones (Shanda) of Halifax, NS; cherished grandchildren, Shaye, Owen and Amelia; brother, Albert Mitton (Dorothy) of Riverview; twin brother, Eugene Mitton (Myrna) of Riverview; sisters-in-law, Donna Sears (late Larry) of Sackville, NB, and Kay Wells (late Victor) of Center Village, NB; several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
