Fundraisers and special events involving food will be able to go ahead for the current school year.
This comes after a statement from the Deputy Minister of Education about the province’s nutrition Policy 711.
Cafeterias will still adhere to the rules laid out. No chocolate milk, juices or other sugary drinks will be served.
But Superintendent for the Anglophone East School District Gregg Ingersoll says it will be status quo for groups that were holding fundraisers and other special events that involve food.
“Essentially right now, I have told the schools that they can continue what they were doing last year. We all want our children to be healthy, but at the same time, food is a big part of the traditions and celebrations that we do and it supports all of the activities that our students do. We just need to continue having that dialogue going forward. The policy just came out in June and many groups a lot of time to adjust. Many had already made commitments for the fall. Definitely we’ll have to discuss if it isn’t being sold to students or eaten by students in school, is that something we can continue to do in the future,” Ingersoll says.
That doesn’t mean things won’t change in the future. Ingersoll says the way the policy is written currently, these types of fundraisers are a no-no.
