No Municipal By-Elections Expected Until New Year

There’s some uncertainty on when the next municipal by-election will be held.

One was originally scheduled for December 3rd, but New Brunswick Chief Electoral Officer Kim Poffenroth says they are now postponing that, “We are looking at whether or not it is still considered appropriate to have that by-election in December because we have to focus on potential preparations for another provincial election. It is really uncertain at this time as when we will schedule municipal by-elections, depending on what happens provincially.”

Poffenroth says by-elections are normally held in May and October, but the one in October was moved to December so it wouldn’t conflict.

Rob McKee, who was elected in Moncton Centre, is also a City Councillor. Once he resigns, Council will declare the vacancy.

Saint John Common Councillor Gerry Lowe’s win will likely be the subject of a recount after winning by only 10 votes in Saint John Harbour.

Once Elections NB receives that declaration, then they will need to schedule a by-election.

There are four MLA-elects who are currently members of Council as well.
