New Online Poll Shows Most Don’t Report Sexual Harassment At Work

Sexual harassment at work, may not always be reported, that according to a new Angus Reid poll.

An online poll of 1500 people found that four out of five people who say they were sexually harassed at work, would not come forward and report it.

The reason? Most said they planned to handle it on their own, while others were concerned that their career might suffer, or they were embarassed or just thought it was no big deal.

In the poll, sexual harassment was descrbed as requests for sexual favours, unwelcome sexual advances, or other types of verbal conduct of a sexual nature.

28 per cent said they had experience unwelcome sexual advances, sexual discussions or requests for sexual favours, all over a two year period.

Most said they preferred to handle the problem on their own, while others cited fear their career would suffer, embarrassment or they felt the incident was too minor in nature.

43 per cent of women say they were sexually harassed, compared with 12 per cent of men.

Three quarters said this issue should be taken more seriously in the workplace than it is.
