NB Group Says Issue Of Poverty Missing From Election Campaign

As the election campaign rolls on, one group says, there is at least one topic missing from the public conversation–poverty and affordable housing.

Sue Calhoun is the Community Development Officer for the Greater Moncton Homelessness Steering Committee.

She believes many politicians find the issue too complex and too difficult to discuss, “I’m not sure to what extent a lot of the politicians or candidates understand this issue.

She says over the last three years, food bank use has been at an all time high, “One of the reasons people use food banks is because they spend too much on rent or a mortgage, and they have no money left to feed the kids.”

Calhoun says affordable housing and poverty should be at the top of every party’s agenda, but it’s not because it’s too technical a discussion, and doesn’t fit in to an 8 second sound bite.
