NB Grandmothers Support Grandmothers In Africa

Grandmothers for Grandmothers is a new charity group in Moncton which stems from the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

Marilyn Bishop and Marilyn O’Brien have founded the local chapter which raises funds for grandmothers who support their grandchildren in sub-Saharan Africa.

O’Brien says the HIV-AIDS crisis has led to many orphaned children on the Dark Continent.

“Grandmothers in Canada have an understanding what it would be like to lose their children and cannot imagine that… or how difficult it must be even in Canada if I suddenly lost my children and had all of my grandchildren to support,” she notes.

The group held a recent fundraiser selling fabric and yarn which O’Brien says raised more than $8,000.

She says 90 cents out of every dollar goes directly to the campaign.

O’Brien adds more events are planned in the near future and more volunteers will also be needed.

Grandmothers for Grandmothers groups have also been established in Shediac, Sackville and Fredericton.
