Grapes and strawberries are a couple of crops in New Brunswick which have been heavily damaged recently by record breaking cold temperatures and frost.
Some grape growers have lost up to 100 percent of their grapes this season.
Zach Everett, co-owner of Magnetic Hill Winery, estimates his vineyard has lost about 50 percent of its grapes to frost which is something you’re never prepared for so late in the spring.
“In April and May we are always conscientious of the risk of frost. In June, you are never ready for it. It’s one of those things where the grapes and the plants and everything has already grown so much,” he says.
He says vineyards are a perennial crop and it’s not just this growing season it could affect but it could affect two or three years from now as well depending on the severity of the situation.
Everett adds farmers in the region could use a hug right now noting how many have suffered tremendous losses for the season.
